Padding & Margins

A little breathing room makes a big difference. Pixel-perfect terminal spacing.

Questions this answers

  • How to add padding to terminal content area
  • Terminal inner margin configuration macOS
  • Terminal text too close to window edge fix
  • Adjust terminal content inset spacing

How it works

Chau7 lets you configure the padding between the terminal content area and the window edges with pixel-level precision. Set top, bottom, left, and right padding independently to create the exact spacing you want. This moves the terminal grid inward from the window frame, giving text room to breathe without wasting screen real estate.

Padding values are stored per profile, so a presentation profile can use generous spacing for readability while a tiling-oriented profile uses minimal padding to maximize content density. Changes apply immediately and the terminal grid resizes to fit the adjusted content area, maintaining correct column and row counts.

Why it matters

Text jammed against window edges looks cramped and feels chaotic. A small amount of padding dramatically improves the visual quality of a terminal window. Chau7 lets you configure padding on all four sides independently, so you can get the exact layout that feels right for your setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set different padding for each side?

Yes. Top, bottom, left, and right padding are independently configurable down to the pixel.

Does padding affect the terminal grid size?

Yes. The terminal grid resizes to fit within the padded content area, so column and row counts adjust to maintain correct text layout.

Can different profiles have different padding?

Yes. Padding values are stored per profile, allowing compact and spacious layouts to coexist.
