SSH Connection Manager

Keep common SSH destinations in one place.

Availability

Implemented in the stable source; configuration and compatibility limits are described below.

Reviewed against stable v0.5.1. Rust candidate additions are labeled separately. Release status.

The pain this solves

  • Repeatedly rebuilding SSH commands makes common destinations harder to manage.

What ships with it

  • Saved records include destination, user, port, identity path, jump-host value, and organizational metadata.
  • Builds a shell-escaped ssh command and validates extra options.
  • Saved connections are distinct from ~/.ssh/config and are not automatically synchronized both ways.

Questions this answers

  • Can Chau7 save SSH connection details?
  • Can a saved SSH connection use an identity file or jump host?
  • Does Chau7 replace my SSH config?

How it works

Saved connection records include a display name, host, port, user, identity-file path, jump-host value, optional command-line options, color tag, group, tags, and notes.

The connection manager builds an SSH command from the saved fields and opens it in a terminal session. Identity-file paths and destination arguments are shell-escaped, and extra options are validated before inclusion.

Connections are stored separately from OpenSSH configuration. Chau7 can read SSH config entries for review and import, and it has an explicit export action; do not assume bidirectional synchronization.

Why it matters

Saved destinations keep connection details close to the terminal workflow. The manager builds a command from the fields you configure while leaving your existing SSH config as a separate file.

Frequently asked questions

Which connection fields can I save?

The stable model includes host, port, user, identity file, jump host, optional SSH options, and organizational notes or tags.

Does Chau7 store private key contents?

The connection record stores an identity-file path, not private key material.

Will changes sync both ways with ~/.ssh/config?

No automatic bidirectional sync is provided. The app has separate import and export actions.
